Fifty Fun State Facts

1. Alabama workers built the first rocket to put humans on the moon.

2. The state of Rhode Island could fit into Alaska 425 times.

3. At one time camels were used to transport goods across Arizona.

4. The World's Championship Duck Calling Contest is held annually in Stuttgart, Arkansas.

5. Castroville, California is known as the Artichoke Capital of the World. In 1947 a young woman named Norma Jean was crowned Castroville's first Artichoke Queen. She went on to become actress Marilyn Monroe.

6. Colorado is the only state in history, to turn down the Olympics. In 1976 the Winter Olympics were planned to be held in Denver. 62% of all state Voters choose at almost the last minute not to host the Olympics, because of the cost, pollution and population boom it would have.

7. In Hartford, Connecticut, you may not, under any circumstances, cross the street walking on your hands!

8. The Lady Bug is Delaware's official state bug.

9. Miami, Florida installed the first bank automated teller machine especially for rollerbladers.

10. In Gainesville, Georgia, the Chicken Capital of the World it is illegal to eat chicken with a fork.

11. In Hawaii, there are only 12 letters in the Hawaiian alphabet. Vowels: A, E, I, O, U Consonants: H, K, L, M, N, P, W

Take a trip with your class across the fifty states of America. Discover the unique characteristics of each area and the state's history. From sea to shining sea, students will learn more about the United Staes of America. This pathfinder will help you create a unit to teach geography, map skills, social science, songs and poetry to help students remeber facts about the 50 states.

38. In Hazleton, Pennsylvania, there’s a law that prohibits a person from sipping a carbonated drink while lecturing students in a school auditorium.

39. The first torpedo boat "Stiletto" was built in Bristol, Rhode Island in 1887.

40. Sumter, South Carolina has the largest Gingko farm in the world.

41. Sculptor Gutzon Borglum began drilling into the 6,200-foot Mount Rushmore in 1927. Creation of the Shrine to Democracy in South Dakota took 14 years and cost $1 million.

42. Davy Crockett was not born on a mountaintop in Tennessee, as the song says. He was born on the banks of Limestone Creek near Greeneville, where a replica of the Crockett's log cabin stands today.

43. Texas is the only state to have the flags of 6 different nations fly over it. They are: Spain, France, Mexico, Republic of Texas, Confederate States, and the United States.
