Mary Lou Johnston Carter
, widely known as a
lighting designer, sportswoman and
philanthropist. Carter, 56, who divided her time
between homes in Honolulu, Maui and
San Francisco,
died at her San Francisco
home, Feb. 6, 1995. Her Diamond Head
home was frequently the site of fund-raising dinners and galas for local
causes, as well as for private entertainment of family and friends. The widow of George R. Carter III, Carter was
a native of California and a
graduate of Punahou School and
Briarcliff College. An award winning developer of lighting design
for public, commercial,
and private buildings, Carter was well known in architecture and interior design circles. Her early career as a cartographer, included
road mapping in
Californai and classified work for the military in Honolulu. A champion swimmer, Carter represented the United
States at the
Pan American Games in Brazil in
synchronized swimming. She was a paddler
for the Lahaina and Outrigger canoe clubs.
As a member of the board of governors of Seabury
Hall, Maui, she was instrumental in
raising funds for campus expansion,
including he Middle School building dedicated to her late husband and his
parents, George R. Carter II and Caroline Balding Carter.
Carter also served as a director of the Strong Carter Foundation,
supporters of the Strong-Carter Dental
Clinic at Kalihi Palama Immigrant Service Center. She was also active in many local organizations
devoted to education, historic preservation and the arts. Carter is survived by sons, Donald R., James
S. and J. Douglas Beaton; her mother, Cecily
Johnston; brothers, Stanton H., Donald L., David H. and Stephen S. Johnston;
sister, Diane Johnston Paton; and three
