Basic Teacher Licensure
(Post-Baccalaureate Option for Teacher Licensing)
Hawaii residents with an earned baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited institution of higher education who desire to teach in the public schools but do not have initial basic teacher license may apply for admission to the elementary, secondary*, or special education program. Once admitted, the individual must complete the requirements as outlined for the chosen teacher licensing program.
Entrance to this program requires Chair of Education approval and is
generally limited to undergraduates finishing licensing requirements,
education majors waiting for a spouse to graduate, or those with
local, Hawaii based, addresses. Regardless, entrance for any
candidate is dependent on available placements after all undergraduates
have been placed. Acceptance is not guaranteed.
Prerequisites for admission include:
- Bachelor's Degree from accredited institution.
- Grade point average of 2.00 or higher.
- Passing scores on the Praxis I: Pre-Professional Skills Test
and Praxis II: Content Test depending on the major.
- A completed School of Education admissions packet.
- Application for admission into BYUH on file with the Admissions
Office
- Acceptance will be based on space available.
